    • Route: Nairobi → Mombasa Road (A109) → Emali Town → Loitoktok Road → Kimana Gate
    • Distance: Approx. 230 km
    • Recommended for: Most travelers using private vehicles or safari tours
  • Via Namanga and Meshanani Gate
    • Route: Nairobi → Namanga Road → Namanga Town → Meshanani Gate
    • Slightly longer and rougher, but scenic

Vehicle Tip: A 4×4 vehicle is recommended, especially during the rainy season, due to rough terrain near the park gates.

By Flight

The fastest way to reach Amboseli is by air.

  • Flight Time: Around 45 minutes
  • Departure: Wilson Airport (Nairobi)
  • Arrival: Amboseli Airstrip (near Kimana Gate)
  • Airlines: Safarilink, AirKenya

Most safari lodges offer complimentary transfers from the airstrip. Flights are ideal for high-end travelers or those on tight schedules.

This method works best when you pre-arrange a transfer. We have a number of Amboseli Safari Packages by Train that connect with Tsavo and down to the Kenya Coast.

By Bus

There are no direct public buses to Amboseli. However:

  • You can take a matatu or long-distance bus to Emali or Loitoktok
  • From there, you’ll need to hire a local taxi or private transfer to the park

Due to limited service and security concerns, this is not recommended for international travelers or those unfamiliar with local transport systems.

FAQ on Amboseli

Which is better, Masai Mara or Amboseli?

Masai Mara and Amboseli offer two very different safari experiences, and the better choice depends on what kind of adventure you’re looking for.

Masai Mara is known for its wide-open savannahs, abundant wildlife, and the world-famous Great Wildebeest Migration. It’s the best destination in Kenya for spotting predators like lions, cheetahs, and leopards in action. If you’re after dramatic game viewing and the thrill of the Big Five, the Mara is the ideal choice.

Amboseli National Park, on the other hand, is celebrated for its large elephant herds and breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro. It’s more relaxed, less crowded, and offers exceptional photo opportunities of wildlife against the snowy peaks of Africa’s tallest mountain. Birdlife is rich, and the open plains make animal sightings easy and rewarding.

For travelers who want excitement and predator sightings, choose Masai Mara. If you’re looking for scenic beauty, peaceful drives, and iconic elephant moments, Amboseli is the better option. Many travelers visit both parks for a complete Kenyan safari experience.
