Where is Salt Lick Safari Lodge?

Salt Lick Safari Lodge is located inside the Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary in Taita-Taveta County, approximately 400 kilometres southeast of Nairobi and around 220 kilometres from Mombasa.

The sanctuary borders Tsavo West National Park, creating an important wildlife corridor that supports large populations of elephants and other iconic African wildlife.

Approximate travel times include:

  • Nairobi – 5 to 6 hours by road
  • Mombasa – 3½ to 4 hours
  • Diani Beach – approximately 5 hours
  • Watamu – about 5½ hours
  • Malindi – approximately 6 hours

Guests can also travel by the Madaraka Express to Voi Railway Station, where transfers to the lodge can easily be arranged.

The lodge's location makes it one of the most accessible safari destinations for travellers visiting Kenya's coast or travelling between Nairobi and Mombasa.

About Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary

A stay at Salt Lick Safari Lodge Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary gives guests exclusive access to one of Kenya's most successful private conservation areas.

The Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary covers approximately 28,000 acres and borders Tsavo West National Park. Because the sanctuary is privately managed, visitor numbers are lower than in many public parks, resulting in quieter game drives and more intimate wildlife encounters.

The sanctuary protects a wide variety of habitats, including open grasslands, acacia woodland, seasonal rivers, and natural waterholes that attract wildlife throughout the year.

Animals regularly seen include:

  • African elephants
  • Lions
  • Leopards
  • Cheetahs
  • Cape buffaloes
  • Masai giraffes
  • Plains zebras
  • Elands
  • Impalas
  • Waterbucks
  • Warthogs
  • Hyenas
  • More than 300 bird species

Morning, afternoon, and night game drives provide excellent opportunities to experience the sanctuary's rich biodiversity.

The lodge features elevated rooms connected by raised walkways, allowing guests to enjoy spectacular views across the wildlife waterholes while remaining completely immersed in nature.

Each room has been designed to maximise wildlife viewing while providing modern comfort.

One of the highlights of staying at Salt Lick is falling asleep to the sounds of wildlife and waking up to elephants gathering beneath the lodge.

For photographers, the elevated rooms provide unique opportunities to capture wildlife from an exceptional vantage point.

Facilities at Salt Lick Safari Lodge

Although famous for its wildlife viewing, Salt Lick Safari Lodge Kenya also offers excellent facilities to ensure a comfortable stay.

Whether you're enjoying breakfast, relaxing with a drink, or dining under the African sky, wildlife is never far away.

Wildlife at Salt Lick Safari Lodge

The wildlife experience is what makes Salt Lick Safari Lodge Tsavo one of Kenya's most popular safari destinations.

Because the lodge overlooks several natural waterholes, animals visit throughout the day and often continue arriving after dark.

Guests regularly encounter:

  • Tsavo elephants
  • Buffaloes
  • Lions
  • Leopards
  • Giraffes
  • Zebras
  • Elands
  • Waterbucks
  • Impalas
  • Warthogs
  • Hyenas
  • Baboons
  • Numerous bird species

The floodlit waterholes provide excellent nighttime viewing, allowing guests to continue enjoying wildlife long after evening game drives have ended.

This constant wildlife activity is one of the reasons Salt Lick Safari Lodge has become one of the most photographed safari lodges in Africa.

The Famous Waterhole Experience

The defining feature of Salt Lick Safari Lodge is undoubtedly its famous waterholes.

Designed around these natural gathering points, the lodge gives guests front-row seats to one of Africa's greatest wildlife spectacles. During the dry season, dozens of elephants may arrive together, while buffaloes, zebras, antelopes, and countless birds visit throughout the day.

The lodge's elevated viewing platforms and underground photographic hide allow visitors to observe animals from multiple perspectives without disturbing them.

Unlike many safari lodges where wildlife is only encountered during game drives, Salt Lick offers remarkable wildlife viewing from the moment you check in until the moment you leave.

For many guests, simply sitting on the viewing deck watching elephants gather beneath the lodge becomes the highlight of their entire Kenya safari.

Safari Experience at Salt Lick Safari Lodge

Every stay at Salt Lick Safari Lodge includes opportunities to explore the spectacular Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary through professionally guided game drives.

Morning and afternoon safaris take guests across open plains, wooded valleys, and seasonal rivers in search of the sanctuary's incredible wildlife. Night game drives, available within the sanctuary, offer the chance to spot nocturnal animals such as hyenas, genets, civets, and possibly even leopards.

Many guests also combine their stay with visits to Tsavo West National Park, creating a richer safari experience that showcases two of Kenya's finest wildlife destinations.

Whether you're visiting for wildlife photography, birdwatching, a family adventure, or a romantic safari, Salt Lick Safari Lodge delivers one of the most memorable safari experiences in East Africa.
