Description

Mara Intrepids is one of the few camps built to cater to families. Set right next to the Talek River, Mara Intrepid Camp has some of the best views Mara has to offer. There is a good reason why up to 75% of the BBC’s big cat footage was shot around Mara Intrepid Camp.

Mara Intrepid Camp is located in an area of the Masai Mara that has a regular flow of animals throughout the year. Families can enjoy luxurious accommodation and up to two game drives in a day in an open safari vehicle.

For families traveling with children, Mara Intrepid Camp has an active children’s club that teaches them about conservation during their stay and keeps the children engaged in participation in various local Masai Games.

Mara Intrepids is a short drive from the Mara River, where more than a million wildebeest and zebra make their perilous migration crossing every July and August. For the remainder of the year, the camp offers some of the world’s finest game viewing, with large local populations of plains game, elephants, rhinos, buffalos, and all the Big Cats. In 2004, some 75% of the footage for the BBC’s famous Big Cat Diary was shot in the vicinity of the camp. Mara Intrepids is 298 kilometres and a six-hour drive from Nairobi, while our all-weather airstrip enables guests to be at the camp within 45 minutes of leaving the capital.

Mara Intrepids is divided into four distinct areas, each with its own open-air dining area and ‘mess tent’ where private meals and functions can be arranged. Dinner is usually served in a large dining room under a traditional makuti thatch roof, while breakfast and lunch are hosted on a breezy terrace beside the riverfront swimming pool. Beside the main bar is a fully equipped conference room, where our Maasai naturalists deliver evening slide shows on the local culture and wildlife – and where corporate and team-building groups can indulge in a spot of ‘bush business’.

Mara Intrepids Camp and sister property Mara Explorer Camp is located just a few minutes from  Olkiombo airstrip. This makes  Mara Intrepids Camp a great camp of choice if you would like to fly to the Masai Mara. If you opt for a road package to the Masai Mara, we recommend taking up a Land Cruiser Package since that the ideal car to handle the Mara Intrepids terrain.

As one of the Mara’s most established camps, Mara Intrepids enjoys a very close relationship with the local Maasai community, from which most of our staff hail. Together with our sister camp, Mara Explorer, we channel part of our fees into local community initiatives, including environmental awareness training, the establishment of medical clinics, and financial support for primary schools, churches and women’s groups. The camp itself is run on strict eco-principles, with hot water generated by burning used coffee husks, biodegradable waste mulched for compost, and all wastewater recycled through our own on-site constructed wetland

How to get to Masai Mara Intrepids Tented Camp

Mara Intrepids is 298 kilometres and a six-hour drive from Nairobi, while our all-weather airstrip, Ol Kiombo, enables guests to be at the camp within 45 minutes of leaving Nairobi Wislon Airport. The airstrip is serviced twice daily by both Safarilink and Air Kenya from Wilson Airport in Nairobi.

Accommodation in our en suite luxury tents, three game drives a day in our open-sided Land Rover jeeps and free adventurers’ club membership for the children (3-11 year olds).

A normal stay is usually 3 days (2 nights) but a longer stay is advised for better incursion in the Maasai country and immersion into their culture and to fully enjoy the safari experience.

What are the Foods & Drinks options at Mara Intrepids Tented Camp?

The Restaurant

Main Meal Plan is usually full board, which includes three lip-smacking meals, Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. Meals are made to cater for the client’s needs.

Dining al fresco on the outside patio of the restaurant is a delight under the canopy of towering trees and untouched gardens. Every meal is a feast. The kitchen boasts its own vegetable garden where the freshest of homegrown herbs, fruits and vegetables are grown. Guests are spoilt for choice with a-la-carte menus and gourmet bar-be-ques under sunny blue equatorial skies or on the inner deck of the shaded thatched dining room. The food fare ranges from continental to traditional African and Asian foods. The desserts are to die for with chocolate mousses and cinnamon tarts, fresh fruits and cheeses presented on platters to wet anyone’s appetite. Nothings too hard for the chefs to turn out any dish ranging from vegetarian to seafood platters on request, including favourite recipes provided by you.

The resident genet and greater bushbabies drop in during dinner, sometimes shy and curious, giving many a newcomer their first sighting of these nocturnal animals. Diners are treated to Maasai dancing by the Maasai morans from the neighbouring manyattas and those daring enough can join in to challenge the Maasai leaps.

For the wild at heart
If dining at the camp proves a tad too tame, you can head out to wilder settings and enjoy sumptuous bush breakfasts and dinners in the bush including sundowners within sight of a lion or a herd of elephants or the hippos snorting in the river below. It’s the ultimate African appetizer.

The Bar

Overlooking the Burrungat plains, drinks at the bar – alcoholic or non-alcoholic –can be exciting. The very eagle-eyed can catch sight of an elephant quietly slipping through the riverine forest or the occasional leopard making a kill. The bar is open all day till the last patron retires.

Enjoy the unique blend of bar cocktails like the Tides of Mara or the Migration Fever. If you’re concerned about safety, the river cuts across the bar and plains, so you can relax and toast a drink to Africa’s wilderness. A bonfire is lit every evening where stories of the day’s adventures are traded and on most evenings, the resident naturalist will give a power point presentation of Mara’s dynamic seasons, each bringing with it its own vibrant changes, forever drawing the Mara enthusiast like a magnet to its sprawling savanna. Guests are advised not to jump into the river from the suspended bridge that connects the plains to the bar – for the river is only reserved for the residents – that means the local hippos and crocodiles.
